Serene Sunday!!

by , in

It seems crazy
to think of this Sunday
being any where close to serene
 given the events
of the past couple of weeks

Our hearts and prayers
are with the families and friends
of the victims
of all of the violence
that has occurred
throughout the world recently

This candle glows in Memory

I hope you find peace
and serenity deep within

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...

by , in

Hi everyone

December has risen it's festive head

So much going on, so many things to do,
so much excitement

I know that I finally settle into the season
once my Christmas tree is up and decorated

I can do the entire house inside and out

but, until that tree is up, it's just not happening

I thought we could get you in the mood by visiting

my favorite spot for inspiration

My colour scheme this year ready for the tree
and the bannister

This is my tree taken in the dark
with my BB, not too clear, but you get the idea

Santa is exercising the reindeer for their big night

So so exciting!!

Are you ready for the big day

Happy Wednesday!!

Thankful Thursday

by , in

I remember when I was growing up
and this time of year rolled around,
I wore the biggest grin until the big
Thanksgiving day meal arrived.

Our home was full of the most amazing
scents known to man.

You see, my Mother was and still is
an incredible baker,
every morsel consumed in our home
was lovingly created from scratch by her.

She made donuts, cakes, pies, flaky pastries,
cookies, sweet and/or savoury,
you name it, she created it
AND I was the lucky taste tester.

I suppose this is where I acquired my sweet tooth.

One of my ultimate favorites has to be "koeksisters"
(pronounced cook-sister and meaning cake sister)
a traditional South African treat,
wickedly sweet and messy as heck
because after it is baked,
it is, get this, dipped in or soaked in SYRUP,

I know, right….HEAVEN!

I have not had these for, I cannot even remember
the last time. This seems like the perfect opportunity
to scout out the recipe and give it a go myself.

I’ve attached the recipe
that I found on CapeTownMagazine.com
and I am going to try these this week,
we will see how it goes.

For the syrup:
  • 530ml water
  • 800g sugar
  • pinch of salt
  • 2,5tsp cream of tartar
  • 1tsp ginger
  • 1 tblsp lemon juice
  • 1 cinnamon stick
For the dough:
  • 300g self-raising flour
  • 200g corn flour
  • pinch of salt
  • 50g unsalted butter
  • 25g baking powder
  • 1\4 cup sugar
  • 200ml milk
  • 50ml cream
  • 2 eggs
For the Syrup (prepare the syrup the day before for best results)
In a pan, heat up the water. Add the sugar, salt, cream of tartar, ginger, lemon juice and cinnamon stick. Bring to the boil and then reduce to a simmer. Stir occasionally. Simmer for 10 minutes. Allow to cool. Transfer to the fridge.
For the Dough:
Add the dry ingredients to a bowl and mix them together. Add the milk, butter, eggs and cream, mixing it all together. Knead with your hand for a couple of minutes. Wrap in cling film, and store in the fridge for 30 minutes. Roll out to a 1 cm thickness. Cut into strips thin strips and then short strips. To plait, tuck three strands together at the top. Fold the outer strips over into the middle, repeating until you reach the end and tuck them together.
To Fry:
Heat up half a pot of oil on a low flame. Place the bowl of syrup in a larger bowl of ice to keep it well chilled. Deep fry the koeksisters, don't put too many in at once. When golden, transfer to the syrup using a slotted spoon, draining off as much oil as you can. Leave to soak in the syrup for a while. Transfer to a cooling rack. Cool completely before eating.

I am off to give this recipe a try

What is your favorite childhood tasty treat?

Bon Appetite

Fun at the Falls

by , in

How are you doing on this lovely September day

I mentioned last week that I would be

travelling to

Niagara Falls, Ontario last Friday

with my ball team

Take a look at this beautiful sight

In person the sound of the rushing water
and the intensity of the crowds

two lovely ladies enjoying the outdoors

Once we settled into our rooms
we waited for all to arrive

Later we descended on the strip for
a super-fun
and well executed
Scavenger Hunt

The lovely lady on the right in the photo above
executed something that
only her brainchild and organizational skills
could pull off

So much fun
It really is amazing when a group of highly
competitive women hit the streets with a challenge
Look out, those poor tourists did not know what hit them

Needless to say
we had a blast

We were given clues to various attractions
 around the Falls
and we had to verify the answers with a photo

Below is a sampling of the sights
we took in during this world wind adventure

When we arrived back at the rooms
in the manner
not unlike the the Amazing Race

This fabulous work of art was waiting for me

A giant cooler basket full and I mean full of candy
all hanging from individual posts
all labelled within a star
all of my favorites
Blown away I was

Get a load of these
Our resident party planner, scavenger hunt
organizer extraordinaire
at it again

Cheesecake pops, hand formed, dipped and wrapped

Individual Neon cupcakes in jars

Oh my goodness, she is amazing
if I did not express my immense gratitude

Thank you so much for all the time
effort you expended to make this
the bestest birthday ever

Dinner in a tasty Italian Resto
before we hit the town
to dance till we drop

You cannot fake these smiles of JOY!!!

(That's me on the left)

No photos of the casino
and absolutely no photos
of the ladies getting their
grove on at 'The Wrinkle Ranch'
dancing like it was 1999

A successful weekend, we cannot wait for next year!

Enjoy yourselves
 with those that bring
YOU JOY !!!!

Fall is just around the corner

It was a chilly one last night
Have you turned on your furnace yet?

I love the cozy
layering of clothes at this time of year

What could feel better
than wrapping yourself in a delightful scarf

Layering a pair of fabulous boots over some jeans
or below tights with skirts

The cuddly feeling of a handmade oversized cardigan

just kidding

These are the lovely items that make me smile right now

What items bring you JOY
 when the Seasons change?

Half Century

by , in

No matter who you are or where you live

we all have something in common

Give up….did you even try to guess…really…

We all came to this world the same way
we are all born on a specific date
because of that
we all have one special day a year

Our Birthday

Well, that day, for me, is coming up on Friday

Usually, I don’t like to mention my birthday to people
yes, I know, I’m social, I’m outgoing

I am also, private and a bit shy and don’t like the spotlight placed on me, more, kind of a background girl
(fine, a loud background girl)

It’s just that, well, this is a pretty big one
the big half-century….seriously….half-century

OMG…how did I get this old!!

I am going with my ball team on Friday morning
to Niagara Falls, Ontario
to hang with the girls
laugh our faces off
scavenger hunt
gamble a bit at the casino
maybe shake our thing at a club
 (you know, for mature women)
and just chill
 pass out
 and drive respectably home
 in the morning

The perfect way to spend my special day
 in my opinion anyway!

How did you spend your special day this year
or what plans do you have
to raise the roof in 2012?

Peace Love
Huge Birthday Hugs Everyone!!
